The proposed light rail project was cancelled as it was too expensive, Minister of Transport Gamini Lokuge stated in Parliament today (8).
He stated this in reply to a question raised by Parliamentarian Waruna Liyanage.
The Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to cancel the light rail project on 28 September.
The project was to be conducted with funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The Cabinet previously stated that the towers to support the railway tracks for the above project would result in severe environmental damage. Construction of these towers would also require the demolition of several buildings, adding to the heavy costs of construction.
